The best Ben & Jerry’s of my life

Last Wednesday I went to the cinema

To watch the new film, ‘All of Us Strangers’

Featuring Paul and Andrew, and Claire and Jamie

And a Ben & Jerry’s that was a game-changer(s)

You see, a B&J sundae is delicious

Though their cost doth drains one’s bank

But I’d pay double – TRIPLE – for this particular sundae

Girl oh girl, the contents of that cardboard cup did rank

Two scoops, warm sauce, and a topping

Is what you’re meant to get

But she scooped and scooped and didn’t stop scooping

A good start – my expectations were more than met

Not one but TWO scoops of flavour one* and TWO of flavour two*

Piled into that small cup

After the last sundae’s rip off that had half a scoop at best

Things only continued to be going up

And those things only got better

When she asked me which sauce I wanted on top

“Hot caramel or chocolate fudge?”

“Both, please – I’ll take the lot!”

Now, she wasn’t allowed to give me both

(I hope you’ll commend my trying)

Was it karma, then, that the chosen sauce bottle lid got jammed?

A sundae without sauce – it was almost worth crying

But the words shot out my mouth like a reflex

There was no time to take them back

“I don’t mind if you just remove the lid

and dollop it on in one fat slap!”

She looked at me like I was Einstein

Then took the sauce bottle to the sink

She twisted and pulled and off the came the lid

My sundae welcomed a sea of warm chocolate fudge in a blink

So if my eyes weren’t already glazed over with longing

They were surely now popping out my head

The friend that I was with looked sadly at her popcorn

“Next time I’ll get a sundae,” she said

But the pièce de resistance was still to come

Which topping was the decision I had to make

“White chocolate polar bears or cookie dough bites?”

Who am I kidding, I always knew which of the two I’d take

For who in their right mind would deny cookie dough bites?

So chewy and chilled and MOREISH

On and on and on the chunks of cookie dough went

It’s February, but this sundae felt like my April birthday wish

That evening was probably the only time I’ve actively beamed

When tapping my debit card on the reader

I’d more than got my money’s worth

And for that, this B&J sundae was the highest achiever

Reclining into that cinema chair

I continued beaming like a Cheshire cat

The first, second, third spoonful of sundae went into my mouth

I ate and I beamed and I didn’t worry about getting fat

*Peanut butter cups – the number 1 Ben & Jerry’s flavour, this is not up for discussion

**Chocolate fudge brownie – a very reliable go-to which always hits the spot, much like its sister, Cookie Dough
